Small shops with owners passionate about the food they put out always top my list of places to eat. The reason? Passion translates into good food and a great customer experience. This is what we experienced on our tasting trip to Gawalmandi Junction in Islamabad.

Located on Agha Khan Road in Sector F-6, the eatery has a reasonable menu spread typical to most takeouts. However, their food is definitely not like your typical takeout. The flavors are fresh and spot on. The have played on some new flavors and added their twist to old favorites such as the Anda Shami (eggs and kabab burger), the Bun Samosa (that’s samosa in a bun, for the unitiated) and the classic Bun Kabab. They have a very amusing naming convention on their menu, especially the ‘Shaista aur Nafees’ section which includes names for the foods we just mentioned, such as: College Ki Yaad (Bun Samosa) and The Pappu Burger (Anda Shami).


Another thing we tried was their Killer Veggie burger. As the advice for mothers goes: if you want to get your kids to eat vegetables, you should know how to deceive them into eating them! Well, these guys have certainly done a brilliant job on that front.

I love Juicy Gossip’s Bun Kabab, and I have to say that Gawalmandi Junction was at par with their Punjabi iteration of this classic desi burger from Karachi.

With winter upon us, Gawalmandi Junction has a good common sitting area to enjoy hot food and take in the fresh air! Yes, we’re all kind of sick of closed spaces, and this is a welcome change.

Oh, and don’t forget to try their special Doodh Patti tea at the end, to make those lovely conversations even longer. This place gets a thumbs up from the Chefling Tales team! Consistency in food quality and perseverance shall take this joint a long way!
