Spring is here! After the much prolonged winters with their deserted streets, overdosed with coffee, soup and dry fruits, its time to shirk those woolen hats and sweaters and open the doors to the most colorful season of the year.
The blossoming season brings with it an air of joy and freshness. It seems as though Mother Nature has painted the canvas of Earth (and Islamabad in particular) with all the colors available in her palate. From the most scrumptious strawberries to the blooming gardens seen at every turn, the three month season is a delight for the senses.
When it comes to Islamabad, every corner and every public space is seen to be paying silent tribute to the season, with beautiful flora, and the hustle and bustle of people enjoying picnics with their loved ones.
For those of you in the city during this magical season, here are a few places to enjoy the perfect spring outing…

Lake View Park
Located near Rawal Dam, this part is another place to enjoy the beauty of spring; with fragrance, cuisine and nature all in one place. If you want to have a fun day with your kids, this is the place to take them. And if you’re a bird watcher, you’ve come to the right place. Almost all species of birds in Islamabad are found here, you can walk among them and see them in their natural habitat.

Japanese Park & Murghazar Zoo
Located at the foothills of Damn-e-Koh, these two places are almost adjacent to one another. You can pack a nice meal go visit the animals at the zoo first. Many of these animals leave their state of hibernation in spring, and are a delight to witness. From birds to tigers and even reptiles, it is sure to be a fun trip. After that you can head over to Japanese Park. With its wooden slides and obstacles, it is a great place to take kids to. They can play while you sit, relax and enjoy the serenity of the flora around you.

Now, when it comes to spring picnics, some of us like to visit areas other than parks. Here are a few other picnic spots where you’re sure to have a great time:
Damn-e-Koh
Surrounded by the beauty of the Margalla Hills and the tranquility of the wilderness around you, you can enjoy a great lunch or dinner at the eateries and stalls around you. You can walk around for hours on end watching the entirety of the capital’s beauty beneath and around you. And nothing can beat the fresh air and smell of wild flowers all around.

Shahdara Bagh
A picnic spot just an hour outside the twin cities, Shahdara is a great option if you are looking for a location near the water. The best option is to take BBQ essentials with you and do a live BBQ with your family or friends. If you don’t want to cook yourself, then you can always order from the restaurants located at the picnic point.

Saidpur Village
This place is recommended for dinner. You have a plethora of restaurants and cafes to choose from; from desi to continental, this location has them all. You can take a stroll around the restored Saidpur Village and see the craftsmen of various cultural goods, such as shawls and stone jewelry, at work in their shops. The village, with its stone pathways and traditionally built houses, presents a unique glimpse into the past.

I recommend you plan a picnic to one of these places every weekend during this spring season. After all, the season comes but once a year. Better enjoy it before it’s gone and the scorching heat of summer begins its reign!
